Their story began on February 13, 2025, in Bogotá, Colombia, one day before Valentine's Day. For their first date the following evening, Joe took Linda to Storia d'Amore, only to learn afterward that he had chosen, entirely by luck, her favorite restaurant.
After dinner, Linda wanted to show him what a real night out in Colombia looked like. She led him to a bar where a live merengue band played louder than he had ever heard and people danced in every open inch of the room. There was Linda in the middle of it all, making friends with strangers, pulling the shy girls at the edges onto the floor, and refusing to let anyone feel left out. Joe, quiet and serious by nature, fell for exactly that: her gift for finding the joy in a room and handing it to everyone in it.
Neither spoke much of the other's language. Linda had barely begun learning English, and Joe quickly came to regret every shortcut he had taken in high school Spanish. After a month together, he was rather proud of how much he had improved, right up until he met her parents and discovered the truth. Linda had been speaking to him like a Colombian toddler all along, slowly and simply so he could follow, while her family showed him no such mercy. His progress, it turned out, was rather less impressive than he had imagined. He fell a little harder anyway.
Beyond the language barrier, they discovered that their values ran deeper than the distance between Washington and Colombia. They wanted the same things from life, held the same things close, and made each other better. She is the unshakable optimist who lives in the moment. He is the steady realist. Each softens the other's edges.
For months, Joe crossed a continent as often as he could, flying from Washington to Bogotá to be with her. Linda came to the United States for the first time that August, and from then on, they were simply side by side.
She arrived to discover that she was not the only one waiting for Joe's attention. There was also Lucy, his dog. Linda, who had been afraid of dogs her entire life and had never had one herself, was won over completely. She now oversees, with great seriousness, Lucy's skincare routine.
In September, for Linda's birthday, they traveled to New York. Joe already knew he would marry her, so when Linda asked to visit the Tiffany & Co. flagship, he happily agreed. It seemed like a fine opportunity to gather ideas. That lasted until she began trying on rings with rather breathtaking price tags and he watched his financial future flash before his eyes.
He quietly took note of everything she loved and later had a ring designed just for her. That November, Joe traveled with Linda to Colombia, asked her parents for their blessing, and the two returned home together.
He proposed on February 13, 2026, one year to the day after they met. On the sand at Newport Beach, along the California coast Linda had always dreamed of, he surrounded her with candles and white roses beneath a sign that read:
